Dump Truck Driver Charged With Reckless Driving After Hampton, VA, Wreck
By Shapiro, Lewis, Appleton and Favaloro, Hampton Truck Accident Injury Attorney
The driver of a dump truck that police say ran a red light in Hampton, Virginia (VA), before hitting seven cars and injuring three people has been charged with reckless driving. Police said the 40-year-old driver from Hampton failed to comply with a red light at the intersection of Magruder Boulevard and Butler Farm Road before the accident on June 14, 2011.
Our Virginia accident injury attorneys reported how the dump truck overturned in Hampton, hitting numerous vehicles and leaving three people injured. Two people were transported to a local hospital by ambulance, and a third person was evacuated by medical helicopter after the dump truck overturned, according to the Daily Press reported.
Investigators said the dump truck driver was heading south on Magruder Boulevard when he “swerved left to avoid crossing traffic “at Butler Farm Road. After the driver lost control, the truck hit seven cars and shed its load of gravel.
Our VA personal injury attorneys deal with many cases in which reckless driving charges are brought, including a recent instance of distracted driving in which a woman lost control of her SUV while reaching for her cell phone. Sadly, we still see too many injuries that are caused by drivers running red lights, including a case in Hampton last year when a woman in a wheelchair was hurt by a driver who ran a red light. The website Smartmotorist.com recent reported that 800 people die each year as the result of accidents involving drivers who run red lights. Another 200,000-plus people are injured each year in these accidents.
Last year, my colleague John Cooper reported on an accident in Henrico County, VA, which saw a driver killed at the intersection of Laburnum Avenue and Charles City Road after another driver ignored a red light. The victim who lost their life in this harrowing accident had two children.
